Healthcare User Group (HUG)

Mission Statement

The New York Healthcare User Group's (NY HUG) mission is to promote the use of electronic data interchange (EDI) by conducting a forum where information and ideas can be shared between the participants. With the enactment of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act's (HIPAA) standard transaction and code sets, the role of the NY HUG will include facilitating the implementation of the final rule.

Specifically, the NY HUG will disseminate issues, proposed resolutions and recommendations formulated at the Workgroup for Electronic Data Interchange (WEDI) Strategic National Implementation Process (SNIP) as they apply to our regional efforts. Issues not already identified by the SNIP committee but identified through the NY HUG will be brought to the attention of the SNIP committee, ensuring that our regional concerns and issues are known.

Purpose

Through discussions at the New York Healthcare User Group (NY HUG) meetings and at the Universal Data Set for Institutional Providers (UDS/IP) meeting, it was decided that the NY HUG will facilitate the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act's (HIPAA) standard transaction and code sets testing and business issue discussions. The UDS/IP will continue to focus on the HIPAA transaction and code sets.

As the HIPAA security and privacy final rules are published, the NY HUG will also facilitate the review of the rules. The NY HUG and the UDS/IP will assist in taking issues forward to the national SNIP committee and will disseminate information received from the SNIP and other national and regional committees.
