MIR-2006-7AB, July 2006
Extended Physician Election Process for the Competitive Acquisition Program (CAP) for Part B Drugs and Biologicals
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has announced an additional physician election period for the CAP for Part B Drugs and Biologicals. The initial physician election period, May 8 - June 2, 2006, was established by Joint
Signature Memorandum ( JSM/TDL)-06419. An extended physician election period will take place from June 3 to June 30, 2006. The CMS is taking this action to provide physicians with a greater opportunity to evaluate the program and determine if the program is right for them. Key implementation points include the following:
- CAP claims processing will start as planned on July 1, 2006 for physicians who submitted their forms during the initial election period ending June 2, 2006.
- The CMS is allowing an extended physician election period from June 3 until June 30, 2006. During this period, all physicians (as defined by Change Request (CR) 4404) who have not
already submitted election forms to their local carriers, can elect to participate in CAP.
- The effective date for elections during this extended period will be August 1, 2006.
