CMS Proposes Payment Reforms for Inpatient Hospital Services in 2008 (PE200705-22)

On April 13, 2007, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) issued the FY 2008 hospital inpatient prospective payment system (IPPS) proposed rule (CMS-1533-P). The FY 2008 IPPS proposed rule appeared in the May 3, 2007 issue of the Federal Register. CMS recently discovered an error that was made in the calculation of the DRG relative weights in the FY 2008 IPPS proposed rule. CMS revised the relative weights to correct the error and recalculated the IPPS standardized amounts.

The changes will increase the IPPS standardized amounts by $0.18. Other information in the IPPS proposed rule will also be affected. The proposed FY 2008 outlier threshold will decrease by $85 to $22,940. There will also be some minor changes to the wage index in the fourth decimal place for some hospitals.

CMS has posted new tables (Tables 1A-1D, Table 2 and Table 4J, Table 5, new payment impact files, new DRG cost and charge weights file) on the CMS Web site. We also expect to publish a correction notice with the revised information in the Federal Register shortly. Please go to the following Web pages for revised FY 2008 IPPS rule information (click to sort the Fiscal Year column in descending order):
