Reminder for Billing Drug Injections
Providers are reminded that when billing Healthcare Common Procedural Coding System (HCPCS) codes for drug injections that the units submitted on the claim, should reflect the dosage amount administered.
For example, HCPCS code J2405 (Injection, Ondansetron hydrochloride, per 1mg.) has 1mg. in the description and the typical dosage is 4MG. Providers are billing 1 unit instead of 4 units.
Providers should ensure that all appropriate staff is aware of this requirement and that their chargemaster system and any other internal system/processes are updated with this information. Compliance with this requirement will ensure that accurate Medicare payments are made.
