When is Medicare Not Your Primary Health Insurance?

Medicare does not pay first if:

· You are over 65, you or your spouse work for an employer who has more than 20 workers and you have health insurance through that job.

· You are under 65, and disabled. If you or a family member works for an employer who has more than 100 workers, health insurance through that job will usually pay first.

· You have End Stage Renal Disease (permanent kidney failure) and group health benefits. During the first 30 months that you have Medicare your group health benefits will pay first. This includes COBRA coverage.

· You have no-fault or, liability insurance or workers' compensation benefits. These pay only for related services.

· You are in the Federal Black Lung Program. For services related to black lung disease those benefits pay first.

Please call the Coordination of Benefits (COB) carrier if you are not sure or if your status changes. Their number is 1-800-999-1118.

If you have Medicare questions please call

1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227)

TTY users should call 1-877-486-2048

Please post or share with your patients.
