Beneficiary Second Insurance Claims

Question:

How do my Medicare claims get to my second insurance?

Answer:

You may send them yourself,

OR

Medicare may send them for you.

  1. Medicare will send your claims to your second insurance IF

  • You have a Medigap policy (A Medigap policy is one you pay for out of your own pocket.),

AND

  • Your provider participates in Medicare,

AND

  • Your provider gives us information about your Medigap policy on the claim.

OR

  1. Medicare will send your claims to your second insurance IF

  • Your second insurance has a crossover contract with Medicare,

AND

  • You are on the crossover list.

You should contact your second insurance to find out if:

  • You have a Medigap policy,

OR

  • They have a crossover contract with Medicare,

AND

  • And you are on the crossover list. Only they can put you on.

If your second insurance is not a Medigap plan or does not have a crossover agreement, you will have to send your Medicare Summary Notices to them.
