Edits
Effective for electronic claims
received after 4:00 p.m. on Friday, November 5, 2004,
rejections will occur for any claims that contain an
invalid state code in any state code or province code
data element.
Medicare uses the state/province codes
listed in the Federal Information Processing Standards
Publication (FIPS PUBS) issued by the National Institute
of Standards and Technology (NIST). Please make sure only
valid state/province codes are reported in the following
data elements:
