New York State Licensing for
Clinical Social Workers
Effective September 1, 2004, the New York State Office
of the Professions has added a new classification for
licensure of Social Workers who wish to practice in the
State of New York. This new designation is Licensed
Clinical Social Worker, and the requirements can be found
at the New York State Office of the Professions, Article
154 Section 7704 (http://www.op.nysed.gov/article154.htm).
Additional information about this change can be found at
http://www.op.nysed.gov/cswfaq2002.htm.
The Medicare IOM (Internet Only Manual), Section 170
A, defines Clinical Social Worker requirements for
reimbursement under the Medicare Part B program and
requires licensure as "Clinical."
As a result of this change in the New York State
classifications, all Clinical Social Workers must be
licensed as Clinical by New York State.
We will be reviewing our provider files for any social
worker who is not currently licensed as clinical by New
York State. We will contact you by mail if you do not
meet this requirement.
