Empire Medicare Services for New York and New Jersey is expanding coverage for darbepoetin alfa to include payment for patients with anemia secondary to myelodysplastic syndrome (ICD-9-CM code 238.7). This coverage will be effective for services provided on or after November 1, 2005.

Starting in January, 2006, darbepoetin alfa should be reported with HCPCS code J0881, for non-ESRD use. HCPCS codes J0880 and Q0137 are effective only for services provided through December 31, 2005.
