Using the IVR - Important Changes! Effective May 1, 2008, when you use the National Government Services Interactive Voice Response (IVR) system, you will be prompted to enter your Provider Transaction Access Number (PTAN). Your PTAN is your existing six-digit Medicare provider identification number (PIN). Most important, as of May 23, 2008 when you use the IVR, you will be prompted to enter both your National Provider identifier (NPI) AND your PTAN. Please make sure that you have both numbers available to you before you contact National Government Services so that we can promptly respond to your questions using the IVR. Our representatives will not be able to provide you with these identification numbers. Reminder: Effective May 23, 2008, all Medicare claims and transactions will require the NPI. A UPIN will no longer be accepted.
