Outpatient Therapy HCPCS Code 97542 Revised Definition In 2006, the definition of HCPCS code 97542 was revised to include the words “assessment” and “fitting.” The complete revised definition is as follows: 97542 Wheelchair management (e.g., assessment, fitting, training), each 15 minutes Beginning with claim dates of service on or after May 1, 2006, providers are to bill HCPCS code 97542, to the fiscal intermediary (FI), when the assessment includes determination of the patient’s need for a wheelchair and the determination of the type of equipment that best meets the needs of the patient. This would include pressure mapping related to the patient’s wheelchair use when medically indicated. Please remember that mechanical repairs and replacements related to wheelchairs should continue to be billed to the Durable Medical Equipment Regional Carrier (DMERC). |
