Fiscal Intermediary Standard System (FISS) Screen and Provider Online Manual Changes The following changes to the Fiscal Intermediary Standard System were effective on April 3, 2006. Within Medicare Part A, Selection 2, then CWF Part A Inquiry, Selection 4, there is a new field called NPI Indicator.
The NPI field relates to the Provider Number keyed within this inquiry. The valid values for this new field are either “N” for National Provider Identifier (NPI) or blank for legacy number. At the present time there should be no use of this field. If there is data present, then the user will receive a response stating: A009 PROVIDER INVALID NPI INDICATOR/PROVIDER If you have keyed any character(s) in the NPI field, you need to blank fill the field using the space bar and then continue on to the provider number field. You cannot use the End of Field key or Delete key, as you will get the error message-A009. Once in the provider number field, you can enter your provider number as usual. You will be instructed in the future as to when you can begin using this field. The revised documentation for this inquiry in the Fiscal Intermediary Standard System (FISS) Provider Online Manual, page IV is available for viewing or printing on the Web site at: http://www.empiremedicare.com/traina/FISSINDEX.htm . Under the HCFA MEDICARE PART A, Selection 1, then Inquiries Selection 1, Beneficiary/CWF, Selection 10 there may be displayed a new Smoking and Tobacco Use Cessation Counseling Services screen.
The new screen will be displayed if CWF has data on the auxiliary file to be returned for the beneficiary’s HIC number that was entered on the eligibility detail inquiry screen. The new screen that you will see in the inquiry is displayed below: CWF Detail, Screen 6 of 7
