Dear County Medical Society Executive Director:
I have enclosed information, currently found on the News section of our website (www.empiremedicare.com), which I feel is important to bring to your attention and to the attention of your society members. I am specifically pointing you to the new requirements for date of service for clinical diagnostic laboratory services furnished on or after November 25, 2002 and the grace period information if a physician or practice is unable to comply with those reporting requirements by that time.
The information on the enclosed document would be important for your members who have an in-office laboratory in which they personally perform clinical diagnostic laboratory tests billed to the Medicare program. It does not apply to physicians or practices who refer their lab tests out to an outside laboratory or who send their patients directly to an outside laboratory.
I want to be sure your members see the date of service requirements and if they represent any change that cannot be accomplished by November 25, 2002 that they take the opportunity to request the grace period extension.
